Redevelopment
UAE-funded terminal project
The airport was redeveloped from funds provided by the United Arab Emirates government. The
new terminal was named after the late ruler of Dubai, Sheikh Rashid bin Saeed Al Maktoum,
who helped fund and oversee its construction. The total project cost was estimated at Rs 260
million.
Phases
Opened in two stages: 2002 and 2007
On 9 November 2002, the first portion of the 4,400-foot (1,300 m) runway was opened with a
PIA Fokker F27 landing from Islamabad. On 21 January 2007, Sheikh Hamdan bin Rashid Al
Maktoum inaugurated the Phase 2 extension with new departures and arrivals halls.
Terminal facilities
Modern terminal with CIP lounge
The terminal includes arrival capacity for 60–70 passengers, departure lounges for about 140,
airline and airport manager offices, a CIP lounge (replacing the traditional VIP lounge
concept), food outlets, a new traffic control tower, air conditioning throughout, and CCTV
monitoring.
