Phases

Opened in two stages: 2002 and 2007

On 9 November 2002, the first portion of the 4,400-foot (1,300 m) runway was opened with a PIA Fokker F27 landing from Islamabad. On 21 January 2007, Sheikh Hamdan bin Rashid Al Maktoum inaugurated the Phase 2 extension with new departures and arrivals halls.

On 17 August 1988, a Pakistan Air Force C-130B Hercules carrying President Zia-ul-Haq and senior diplomats crashed shortly after takeoff from Bahawalpur Airport. The cause was never conclusively determined, though sabotage has been widely suspected.
